The game is set in the "Forbidden Lands," a harsh, uncharted region that has been isolated for over two thousand years. The plot revolves around a young boy named Nata, who is found injured in the wasteland by a group of explorers. Nata claims to be from the Forbidden Lands and that his people, the Keepers, were attacked by a monster known as the "White Wraith".

    The player takes on the role of a recently promoted Hunter, tasked with escorting Nata back to his home and investigating the White Wraith. The story unfolds across several acts:

    1. The player is introduced to the Scorched Expanse and encounters their first major hunt against a Duneclaw Rathian.
    2. A hidden oasis settlement called Mirage Haven is discovered, and a rogue hunter named Kael reveals secrets about the Guild's experiments with ancient technology.
    3. The Sandshift phenomenon intensifies, causing massive environmental changes. The player learns about a Primordial Leviathan called Amatsu-Sekhmet.
    4. A dramatic twist reveals that the Crimson Mirage is a time-displaced version of the player from a future where the Sandshift has destroyed the world.
    5. The final act involves confronting Amatsu-Sekhmet and restoring balance to the desert.

    Throughout the story, the player is accompanied by a diverse cast of characters, including Alma (the handler), Gemma (a blacksmith), Olivia (a veteran hunter), Erik (a botanist), and Werner (another blacksmith). These characters play a more active role in the gameplay, participating in hunts and providing support to the player.

    The narrative explores themes of community, the relationship between humans and nature, and the consequences of tampering with ancient technologies. While the story is more developed than in previous Monster Hunter games, some critics have noted that it may feel somewhat streamlined compared to the rich narrative traditionally conveyed through quest text in earlier installments.
